This past June Robert Kidd, our Vice President of Sales, got to sit down with CyPhy Works CEO, Lance Vanden Brook and discuss how CyPhy is bringing new and innovative ideas and solutions to the drone industry via tethered drones and PARC. Below are some of the highlights from their discussion.
WHAT IS A TETHERED DRONE?
A tethered drone uses a tether or ‘rope-like-structure’ to provide stability and power to a drone. This is distinctly different from most battery powered, free-fly drones.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
There are many advantages to using a tethered drone, but the biggest – Persistent flight. While battery-powered drones may only have enough power to fly for a few minutes, a tethered drone can run for days.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS FOR THIS?
One of the biggest applications that Lance discussed was portable towers. For example, in the event of a natural disaster, emergency responders and telecommunication companies will need to get a cellular network up and running quickly for operative communication. A tethered drone utilizing a communication payload can be used to provide the necessary support for days while traditional cellular towers are down. This is vital for not only securing effective communication, but potentially saving lives.
Another example is defense markets. CyPhy’s drones and technology can be used for both persistent surveillance and communication needs.
WHAT IS PARC?
The Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications platform (PARC) is considered a breakthrough in drone technology. By providing stable, secure and autonomous flight, PARC allows the user to focus on the mission at hand, rather than controlling the UAV.
CyPhy’s system provides secure communication and ensures continuous flight, lasting for days. Extremely durable, the tether is capable of keeping PARC anchored to one location, eliminating the risk of fly-aways.
PARC is easily portable, quick to assemble, rugged and resistant to all types of weather including: wind, precipitation and airborne debris.
The best part? PARC has the unique ability to act as a platform to support any number of payloads – handling any business need. From cameras to communication equipment and even environmental sensors, PARC is capable of carrying up to 6 pounds and up to 400’ operational altitude (currently the legal limit as dictated by the FAA).
INSIDER KNOWLEDGE
Coming this fall – Mobility. CyPhy will be launching a new solution that allows for a ground station in the back of a vehicle with the drone following close behind.
